NoVelo human-powered vehicle updates Flintstones age

Remember the "car" that was found in Flintstones cartoons? Well, it has gotten a 21st century update in the form of the NoVelo, thanks to the efforts of Tim Turrini-Rochford, a student from the University of South Australia. This hybrid vehicle will be powered by human movement and electric power, where it is based on the body of a velomobile albeit featuring extra electric motors for high speed commutes. Relying on a parallelogram linkage which allows it to tilt through corners, the merging of a horizontal and vertical airfoil deliver better aerodynamics and enables the NoVelo to hit a top speed of 50kph thanks to its built-in 300W hub motor. Not exactly the set of wheels you will use to pick up ladies at a club (since it seats only one), but it could be a decent green alternative in overcrowded cities.

Chevy Volt electric car now on sale, no more a concept

The Chevy Volt electric car was a concept as early as three years plus ago, but today, General Motors has turned that into a dream by rolling out this $33,500 green vehicle. How did we arrive at that figure? Well, it was slapped with a $41,000 price point, but that was before a federal tax credit. Each purchase will come with an 8-year and 100,000-mile warranty, making it qualify for a $7,500 federal tax credit. The Chevy Volt is expected to be delivered to your doorstep later this year if you are one of the 10,000 people who placed an order for it already.

Batpod Replica Bike Dubbed The PS-Pod

One of the coolest things of the latest Batman movie, The Dark Knight, was the Batpod, Batman's super cool bike. After the movie, we've seen many folks try and replicate such a design on their bikes, and now Pankaj Shah, a confessed Batman fan, has come up with his own Batpod replica, dubbed the PS-Pod. It looks slightly different from what we see at the movies, and obviously it doesn't sport any weapons, but it still looks incredibly cool, and we wouldn't mind riding to work on that.

Nokia CEO: Nokia N8 is the savior

"We are approaching the end of this painful product transition at the high end of our product portfolio", says Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo. He continues with a prediction "delivering the N8, with a high-quality user experience, will mark the beginning of our renewal. We will achieve our potential and regain high-end leadership in our industry."

We absolutely want to give Nokia the benefit of the doubt, but at the moment, this seems like a very optimistic prediction from Nokia's CEO. Although the N8 looks very interesting, it has not generated "envy" and "desire" as other recent handsets did – although there are N8 clones already. More importantly, it is powered by Symbian 3, which we consider to be out of the smartphone operating system race at this point (the N8 is the last N-Series Symbian phone). The early N8 previews were not positive.

Nokia Kinetic concept now a prototype

Remember the Nokia Kinetic handset that was covered a few days ago, where it will actually stand up from a lying position whenever there is an incoming call or text message? Well, it already comes with a prototype which cannot be turned on unfortunately. Just in case you were wondering how was it ever going to stand up without the help of pixie dust, it will rely on an electromagnet located in the phone's base. We can only keep our fingers crossed that this will be a prototype that will eventually be realized in solid, working hardware.

Motorola Droid X Encountering Wi-Fi Issues?

While most folks have their attention focused on the iPhone 4's Death Grip issue, it seems that the freshly-launched Motorola Droid X is not without its own set of problems. Aside from the recent display issues, users are also reporting that the phone has difficulty connecting to Wi-Fi hotspots, and also encounters poor network performance once a connection has been established. According to affected users, changing the encryption from AES to TKIP seems to help, while other folks have also noticed that using 802.11g instead of 802.11n helps to reduce the occurrence of the issue too. Hopefully Verizon and Motorola will get to the bottom of this issue soon.

Apple breaks record revenue with $15.7 billion quarterly profit

Apple has done it again, sending their stockholders into new euphoric highs with news of hitting a record $15.7 billion quarterly profit for its fiscal 2010 third quarter ended May 27, 2010. This is a result of selling 8.4 million iPhones in the quarter, an increase of up to 61% compared to over the year-ago quarter. Not only that, Apple managed to shift 3.27 million iPads within the quarter, which is no mean feat no matter how you look at it. On its way to break that record figure, Apple also sold 3.47 million Macs and 9.41 million iPods during the quarter. Well, kudos to those who have stuck with the company's stock long enough to reap a handsome profit at the moment. As for those who are thinking about jumping aboard the bandwagon, you might want to do your research thoroughly first.

Samsung Working On An Unbreakable Flexible AMOLED Display

AMOLED displays are already pretty popular, so much so that it's a well known fact that Samsung has trouble keeping up with production of AMOLED displays. Despite that, the Korean manufacturing giant has its mind on creating an unbreakable AMOLED display. This is achieved by using a plastic AMOLED panel that is covered with a thin film transistor, and replacing the vinyl protection sheet with a polyimide film. If you're wondering what the result is, check out the video demonstration after the jump. Suffice to say, a hammer doesn't seem to be able to break this fancy AMOLED display. Samsung is planning to get this AMOLED display out within two years, and hopefully the company won't have any trouble maintaining its production capacity then.

WIN ACCORD's 10.4-inch Digital Photo Frame That Can Double Up As A USB Monitor

What do you do with your digital photo frame if you can't decide what picture to put on it? Well, if you had the WIN ACCORD DF10411-13 10.4-inch digital photo frame , you could always just have it double up as a USB monitor for a notebook, thanks to the bundled EzDisplay software. Aside from that, the device sports SD cards, MMC, Memory Stick readers and also USB flash drives. Pricing and release dates of this item hasn't been confirmed yet, but considering that the device got the seal of approval from the FCC, so hopefully it won't be too long to be able to be available stateside.

Motorola Explains The Misunderstanding Of The Droid X Bootloader

The recent Droid X bootloader controversy isn't the kind of situation that you want to be in, but despite that, Motorola seems to be going through a rather happy mood at the moment, especially since the Droid X managed to sell out all over the place. According to a statement released by the company, if the device attempts to boot with unapproved software, it'll go into recovery mode, after which you'll be able to reboot once the software is re-installed. Hopefully this doesn't become too troublesome an issue for the Android hacking community.

Road SMS makes Samsung Galaxy S transparent - sorta

Now here's an interesting application if you happen to own a spanking new Samsung Galaxy S - we're talking about the Road SMS which is available exclusively via the Samsung Apps download store on the Galaxy S, which will create an optical illusion of the handset being transparent by overlaying a QWERTY keyboard on top of a live view from the phone’s camera. This basically allows you to text while walking, although your level of attention to what's going on in the background is much less than walking with both eyes peeled on the road totally, but at least it might give you some hope of avoiding an open manhole while texting.

The Joy Concept Replicator

Have you ever been in a situation that you needed more plates or cutlery for your party, but were too lazy to walk to the store to purchase it? If we all had this device, dubbed the Joy Concept, we wouldn't have to walk to the store anymore. It's capable of creating a stack of plates or cutlery from almost nothing, using what it calls "Claytronic" technology in order to create what you want. The best part is, when you're done, you can just place the used dishes on the Joy Concept panel, and the plates and cutlery will be turned into particles to be used again later. Sounds pretty cool and very futuristic. Maybe we'll all have one of these in our homes in the future, it would make cleaning up after parties a lot easier in any case.

EyePet PSP And Invizimals Will Not Support The PSPgo In North America

Seems that PSPgo owners who want to enjoy games such as the camera-driven EyePet PSP and Invizimals might be out of luck. Word is out that the console will not support the necessary camera, which was designed for pre-PGPgo models only. The slight bit of good news is that there is actually a converter cable that should do the trick, but it's currently only available in Japan. The camera should be available later this year, when Invizimals is launched in North America later this year.

England hit Kazakhstan for four to take big step towards World Cup 2010

England took a massive step towards qualification for the 2010 World Cup with a sixth win in six games, against lively but limited Kazakhstan. With just Andorra at Wembley before the players hit the holiday beaches – as close to a formality as international football can offer – Fabio Capello's team can look forward to kicking off next season with a maximum 21 points and a passage to South Africa almost assured.

Gareth Barry scored the first goal, but picked up a booking that will keep him out of the next game. Yet, as England added further goals through Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard to set up what could be a record-breaking start by Wednesday night, they will not mind too much about that.

Perhaps there is nothing all that impressive about winning in Almaty – England beat the Kazakhs 5-1 at Wembley and Belarus managed a similar scoreline here – but after a long season and arduous journey, this fixture had all the ingredients for an upset. England were reminded of that with under a minute on the clock when Glen Johnson let Tanat Nusserbayer through on the left and John Terry had to step in to help Robert Green deal with the cross after the goalkeeper failed to collect it cleanly.

On his first international start, Green's confidence was further shredded when Sergey Ostapenko beat him to a free-kick at the far post 16 minutes later, only for the goal to be ruled out and the delirium in the stadium to be brought to a halt by an offside flag.

For all Capello's touchline consternation there was a jolly, end-of-season atmosphere from the start in a picturesque stadium, with the sun setting over the Tyan Shan mountains and ticketless locals making use of a nearby tower block to gain a view.

England eventually settled to play some football, though the first half-hour was frantic and formless enough to bring Capello to his feet on several occasions after he initially expressed displeasure with Johnson. "I was disappointed with the positions of some of our players, but it was hard to get the message across," Capello said when asked to explain why he had spent the first 30 minutes imitating Basil Fawlty on a bad day.

"I told the players beforehand that Kazakhstan would press us like that; we ought to have been expecting it, but when the first goal went in it changed the game." He stopped short of saying it was "bleedin' obvious", but four goals to the good can calm anyone down.

Neither side managed to keep the ball particularly well in the opening minutes and Barry had already been guilty of a couple of stray passes when he was booked in the 15th minute for pulling back Zhambyl Kukeyev. England needed to calm down, and calm the game down, and were grateful for the respite granted by a knee injury to Ostapenko and the striker's subsequent early departure.

When a Rooney shot from distance flew harmlessly over the bar, at least it was a sign England were moving in the right direction. Alexandr Mokin cleared straight to Heskey shortly afterwards and although the striker was not quick enough to return an immediate shot towards an empty net, he was unlucky to see his eventual effort rebound from the foot of a post.

Once England got a grip on what was always a physical contest, they were rewarded. Rooney and Theo Walcott began to get involved in the game – a promising run by Walcott down the right came to an end only when he showed too much of the ball to a defender – and a move instigated by Rooney for Ashley Cole down the left resulted in a corner from which England took the lead. Cole played the corner short and Steven Gerrard lofted a cross to the far post, where Barry made up for his earlier aberrations with a firm downward header.

There were only five minutes to the interval, but once the deadlock had been broken England relaxed and had a second goal by half-time. Not just any goal either, but Heskey's first in competitive England internationals since the 2002 World Cup finals. He will not get many easier chances to boost his England tally. Gerrard tried his luck with a long-range shot and Mokin dropped the ball at Heskey's feet. Even a finisher as notoriously erratic as Heskey was not going to pass up such an opportunity and he can now boast seven goals in 53 England appearances.

The urgency went out of the game in the second half, although interest was provided by Shaun Wright-Phillips replacing Walcott and proceeding to miscontrol virtually everything that came his way. That did not stop Rooney scoring his eighth England goal in his past six games with a spectacular bicycle kick, after his original effort had been beaten out following Johnson's run and cross down the right.

David Beckham came on once the match was definitely won, though there was still time for a Frank Lampard penalty after Heskey had been hacked down by Renat Abdulin.

In fact, there was time for a comedy pitch invader, who snagged himself in Green's net and saved the chasing police the trouble of catching him. That at least brought a late, rousing cheer from the home crowd. If England were not at their most convincing, the Group Six table certainly looks convincing enough. Climb to the top of the mountains here abouts and you can see Xanadu. If England make it seven out of seven on Wednesday, they can stake a similar claim.

FCC gets visit from Motorola Quench and CLIQ XT3/XT5

The FCC recently check out a new Motorola smartphone known as Greco, where it will arrive on the market known as either the Quench XT3 and XT5, but unfortunately it is rather tricky trying to tell the difference between the two. Currently, the Quench is actualy the international version of the CLIQ XT. There is still no confirmation on which carrier Stateside will be offering this new phone, but at least we know it has been approved for WCDMA bands II and V which points toward AT&T. All in all, it would be a midrange handset that should be functional at best, so hopefully an official announcement will be made in due time for curious onlookers.
