Bugatti drives in Veyron; at Rs 16 cr it's India's most expensive

The benchmark for luxury cars in the country just got higher with Volkswagen Group company Bugatti Automobiles today launching its super premium sports car 'Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport', with price starting at Rs 16 crore, the most expensive car to hit the Indian roads.

"Bugatti has been doing well in America, Europe and the Middle East. Now we see India as an emerging market for us, hence we have decided to bring the car to India," Bugatti Automobiles Sales Market Manager (Middle East, Europe and India) Guy Caquelin told reporters here.

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport, priced at Rs 16 crore onwards, will be distributed by the company's Indian dealer Exclusive Motors. So far, the most expensive cars in India have been the Rolls Royce Phantom and the Maybach, which are priced around Rs 5 crore.

"The price of the car will be subject to foreign exchange fluctuation and the levels of customisation that a buyer demands," Exclusive Motors Managing Director Satya Bagla said.

He, however, said that with the Indian luxury car market growing at about 25 per cent there is an opportunity for such expensive cars.

"The Bugatti Veyron is four times more expensive than what's being sold in the India. So we are currently testing the customer response," Bagla said, when asked if there has been any order for the car.

He said delivery would take about 6-8 months from the date of order.

Caquelin said Bugatti is aiming between 60 and 80 units of the car to be sold across the globe this year and there have been queries from 3 to 4 Indians globally.

The company claims that the Bugatti Veyron is also the fastest car on production that is allowed to drive on normal roads in the world with a top speed of 407 km/hour with an acceleration of 0-100km/hour in 2.7 seconds.

The car, which uses components made of special materials like titanium, carbon fibre and magnesium is powered by an 8 litre engine with 16 cylinders and is assembled by hand at the company's hand headquarters Molsheim in France.

Most Expensive’ Home Spurs Urban Myth

Like the legendary island that it is supposedly named for, billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s massive new home, Antilia, seems to have a lot of myth and misinformation swirling around it.

The latest surge in interest in the 27-storey home that towers over Mumbai’s toniest neighborhood, was triggered after a local report that India’s richest man would at last be holding a house warming party and puja on Oct. 28.

Papers and websites from Singapore to Scotland (and yes, a WSJ blog) used the report as a reason dig up all the old “facts” on the vertical mansion, which looks at first glance like an unstable stack of books. Unfortunately, according to people familiar with the building and the party, many have been getting the details wrong.

The party isn’t until Nov. 28, the home won’t have 600 servants as has been frequently reported for years and the building isn’t worth billions (though if you divided it into separate apartments, sold every square foot at the going rate and the rate was not affected by this hypothetical tsunami of new luxury spaces in that neighborhood, it might sell for that much). One report even suggested that the building may not actually be called Antilia.

On Nov. 28, the 200 or so friends and family members lucky enough to get the golden ticket to see inside Mr. Ambani’s chocolate factory will be entertained by the billionaire and his wife as well as by tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, say people familiar with the party plans. It will be a cozy gathering as with 27 floors there will be less than eight people per floor. It’s likely more people will get to see U.S. President Barack Obama in person during his visit to Mumbai next month, than get invited to see the inside of the Antilia (or whatever it is called).

And of course not all the reports are false. In addition to unimpeded views of the city and the Arabian Sea, the building has the helipads, home theater, gym, gardens and pool that every self-respecting billionaire requires.

While far from the frantic pace of construction and clean up in New Delhi ahead of the Commonwealth Games last month, construction crews seemed to be putting the finishing touches on the building this week.

One construction worker seemed to be counting the many western-facing windows of front of the building. On the southern side of the building they were putting up a movie-screen sized wall that will keep Mr. Ambani’s neighbors from peeking into his yard. And along Altamount Road—an address long favored by the city’s rich and famous—lies a feature rarer than a helipad or a six-storey garage, a luxury almost unheard of in India’s richest city: a front lawn covered with freshly-laid sod.

The official funniest jokes of all time

London, Oct 22 (ANI): A team of researchers believe they have identified the 50 best one-liners.

Researchers scoured the web and examined more than 1,000 jokes before whittling them down to a final 50 on which 36,000 people voted.

They include digs at wives, husbands, blondes and foreigners and risque jokes about religion, anorexia - and animal cruelty.

A quarter-century after his death comedy hero Tommy Cooper makes a strong showing in the list, which also includes gags by Peter Kay, Lee Evans and Canadian comic Stuart Francis.

Here at the ones that made the top 10:

10. A man walks into a bar with a roll of tarmac under his arm and says: "Pint please, and one for the road."

9. I'm on a whiskey diet. I've lost three days already.

8. Another one was: Doc, I can't stop singing the 'Green Green Grass of Home'. He said, "That sounds like Tom Jones syndrome'. 'Is it common?'I asked. 'It's not unusual," he replied.

7. Two aerials meet on a roof - fall in love - get married. The ceremony was rubbish - but the reception was brilliant.

6. Police arrested two kids yesterday, one was drinking battery acid, the other was eating fireworks. They charged one - and let the other one off.

5. I said to the Gym instructor "Can you teach me to do the splits?" He said, "How flexible are you?" I said, "I can't make Tuesdays"

4. A young blonde woman is distraught because she fears her husband is having an affair, so she goes to a gun shop and buys a handgun. The next day she comes home to find her husband in bed with a beautiful redhead. She grabs the gun and holds it to her own head. The husband jumps out of bed, begging and pleading with her not to shoot herself. Hysterically the blonde responds to the husband, "Shut up...you're next!" '.

3. Dyslexic man walks into a bra...

2. I went to the zoo the other day, there was only one dog in it, it was a shitzu.

1. A woman gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says: "Ugh, that's the ugliest baby I've ever seen!" The woman walks to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her: "The driver just insulted me!" The man says, "You go up there and tell him off. Go on, I'll hold your monkey for you."

It's nice to see jokes from the greats like Tommy Cooper and Les Dawson are still up there and the ugly baby tale is a worthy winner," The Daily Mail quoted a spokesman for www.OnePoll.com as saying.

"Many of the jokes in the list are fairly timeless and will still be making people chuckle in thirty years or more."

A Diwali Gift to All Pulsar Fans

Well, when its competitors come up with every other vibrant colour out there, why should Bajaj sit and watch? They’re giving Pulsar a flamboyant metallic orange shade that will exclusively be available on the Pulsar 180, 220 and 220F variants.

When the fuel tank, doom and the rear panels come in metallic orange colour, the front mud guard and side panels remain black. However, there won’t be any mechanical changes to any of these models.

Prices will remain unchanged, too – 180cc at Rs 74,300, the naked 220 DTS-i at Rs 80,900 and the top end Pulsar 220F at Rs 84,300 (prices, on-road Mumbai).

Pulsar, which is largely responsible for changing Bajaj’s ‘scooter maker’ image, is by far the leading sports machine in India with a consistent 50 per cent market share.

Surya ensures Tamil Rakht Charitra a single part release

Vivek Oberoi would be a part of the history with him being the first mainstream hero ever to have a two-part release of his film. Rakht Charitra would be arriving in its first part this Friday while the second part would come exactly a month later. However, this is for the Hindi and the Telugu version.
When it comes to the Tamil version, which is expected to be spearheaded entirely by Surya due to his immense popularity down South, Rakht Charitra would release in a single, albeit a longer version.
Confirms Ramu, "In the Hindi version, Vivek (Oberoi) features in both the parts of the film though Surya is only introduced in the first part while he becomes far more prominent in the second version. Hence, it was a given that the Hindi version of the film would release in both the parts. Telugu version too made sense to come in two distinct parts since the audience out there in Andhra Pradesh and adjoining regions are pretty much aware about the core story and the exploits of Paritala Ravi (played by Vivek) and Suryanarayan Reddy (Surya). Hence, for them it's the story that would matter most, more than the actors playing the part."
However, what tilted the balance in favour of a single part release of the Tamil version of Rakht Charitra was the bigger presence of Surya in it. It was apparent that since Vivek comes primarily from the B-town, the audience may have gone a little restless to see only him in the first part of the film and then wait for their local hero Surya to arrive only in the second part.
"Not that you would see only Surya in the single part Tamil version", reassures Ramu, "Vivek is an integral part of the film and while he anyways had an equal role to play along with Surya in the second part, there are scenes of his from the first part that have been integrated with the second part here. So now we will have a full length feature film with both the actors."
While both parts of the Hindi and Telugu versions would be a little over two hours each, the Tamil version is expected to be released with a three hours running length. Moreover, the editing of each of the three versions - whether Hindi, Telugu or Tamil, would differ as well so as to bring to fore the local flavour of the territories. This means that the trilingual features all the actors enacting their scenes little differently in each of the versions.
"I spoke in all the three languages - Tamil, Telugu as well as Hindi - but enacted the scenes differently", says Surya who is not quite looking at Rakht Charitra as his big Bollywood launch but is instead treating it as just another exciting film of his, "Yes, I know that in Tamil, the film is coming in only one part."
Though he stays on to be quite modest about his popularity in South being the sole reason for the decision being made, he humbly attributes the decision making to his director Ram Gopal Varma.
"Since the first part doesn't feature me for most of its duration, Ramu felt it would make sense to wait for some time and then club both parts together", says Surya, "Ramu feels that the film would find more patronage in Tamil version if crowds come in because of me."

Green Oscar Winners Were Veerappan’s Hostages

Krupakar and Senani, who won a Green Oscar last week for their film on wild dogs, have lived mostly in the forests. Actually, they are city folks, but they love the wilderness so much they can’t live in a city any more.

The friends spent over a decade making the film, and the award is a big milestone in a lifetime of exploration and adventure. But if you run into them, they won’t waste any time talking about their awards, and you shouldn’t either. They have more exciting stories to tell.

One of their most exciting stories is about Veerappan. The bandit, then India’s most wanted, landed at their door one night in 1997. They were then busy photographing birds, and researching the lives of wild dogs, which they describe as the most mysterious among the predators. One of Verrappan’s informants (unreliable in this case) had told him they were government officials, and he thought he could hold them hostage and wrest his demands from the government. What he wanted: clemency, and a lot of money.

Krupakar and Senai, already famous as wildlife photographers, had ended up in the hands of a ruthless killer. Veerappan had trapped and murdered scores of policemen and government officials, poached hundreds of elephants for ivory, and smuggled out tons of sandalwood. No self-respecting government would give in to his demands easily.

Veerappan tied them up and herded them out into the forest. The next morning, he stopped a tourist bus and a forest department jeep, and kidnapped an agricultural scientist and two forest guards. Over the next 14 days, he took them to enchantingly beautiful hide-outs. The police search teams could do little. Veerappan knew the terrain so well he had outsmarted the police and the army for years.

Veerappan and his men kept the hostages on the move. Their only source of news was the bandit’s beat-up transistor radio, and as the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments grappled with the problem, Veerappan worked out his counter-strategies. At various points in the drama, he was angry, hopeful, mad, despairing, and funny, and his hostages lived through their own gamut of emotions.

Krupakar and Senani have written about their hostage experiences in a Kannada book. As you might expect, it is a thrilling caper, and comes to a happy end when Veerappan decides to release them without harm. The narrative also reveals in its sweep the animal and plant treasures hidden deep inside the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu forests. Veerappan’s thuggery gets a close-up look, and we also get to see his less cruel face.

Krupakar and Senani are so inseparable that you couldn’t have heard of one and not the other. To friends, wildlife enthusiasts, and the media, they are always Krupakar Senani, without as much as an ‘and’ separating their names. But their individual traits come through in their narrative. Senani studied to be a civil engineer, and Krupakar is a business management graduate. Senani is athletic, good at strategy, and can be impatient. Krupakar loves gags, cigarettes and, when inside the city, pastries. Together, the friends keep pulling Veerappan’s leg through what would have been, for the less daring, a terrifying drama. Their gallows humour helps them strike a friendship with Veerappan. (They’ll dismiss you as crazy if you talk about the Stolkholm syndrome and things like that). They bring back, at the end of 14 days, a tape on which he has recorded his demands, but their attempts to get him to surrender fail.

By winning the Green Oscar against such formidable contenders as Richard Attenborough, Krupakar and Senani have done India proud.

iPhone rates Jolie as 'hottest celeb'

iPhone has launched a new application called Ugly Meter that rates people's ugliness - and it has rated Angelina Jolie as the hottest celebrity.

The Ugly Meter lets users take a snap of a person's face. It then analyses the "contours" of the face, and gives a score out of 10 and the higher the score, the more ugly the person.

Jolie scored a fantastic 2.0 out of 10. The program said Angie is "so hot" she would "make the sun jealous," reports The Daily Star.

On the other hand, Mad Men babe Christina Hendricks scored 10 on 10, while Kate Price's husband Alex Reid scored 8.0.

"You could walk through a haunted house and come out with a pay-check," said the application for Reid.

New mum Dannii fared worse, pulling in a repulsive 9.8, before being told, "You're so ugly you'd make a glass eye cry."

However, Sherry Adhami of charity Beatbullying is worried that use of the app could get out of control in the classroom.

"If young people are already feeling vulnerable or insecure, this tool could have devastating effects. We would urge Apple to bring in more positive things for young people," she said.

The app costs 99p to download from Apple's App Store and requires 5.5MB of free space on the iPhone. It was develop-ed by firm The Dapper Gentle-men and users simply take a picture to score their prey.

Bigg Boss provides extra food, a special bed and more to help Khali ease in with the other housemates on the TV show

Kunal Guha
As viewers of Bigg Boss get ready to watch their favourite WWE star lead a normal life on the reality show, we give you a peek into how the Punjabi wrestler spent his first day:
Sleeping beauty: Thanks to Bigg Boss, Khali was provided with a special giant bed to accommodate his seven feet three inches self. Let's hope this special bed offers Khali with sweet dreams.
Egg and flow: Aware of Khali's appetite, Bigg Boss sends an extra supply of milk and 20 eggs. This was preceded by the women contestants appealing to Bigg Boss, saying, "Agar inke hisaap se khaana nahi aaya, phir hum sab so jaenge!" (If you don't send food considering Khali's appetite, we will all go to sleep). This protest was marked by the fact that the food ration in the house was already limited and the existing housemates had been complaining of getting insufficient meals.
Spilling the beans: The morning begins with a casual chat, as Khali kicks back on a bean bag. The housemates brief Khali on the rules of the house and how they've managed to survive.
Breakfast of champions: As the extra supply of food has been sent, there's no holding back for Khali. He devours a breakfast complete with 10 boiled eggs (only the whites) and a few bread toasts.
Pumping iron: Predictably, Khali decides to share his gym schedule with the housemates in the garden area. Fitness instructor, Rahul Bhatt is obviously most interested to take notes and joins him in doing push-ups and several weight-training workouts. The other men in the house just sit about watching them workout.
Shower time: As expected, the bathroom is a bit small for Khali who just about manages to crawl in for a shower with his head touching the ceiling. Once he emerges from his bath, he complains that the shower doesn't have much force, elongating the time one spends for a proper bath. He also adds that he was willing to adjust with these little things that don't bother him as much.
Sing is king: Manoj Tewari tells Khali that he's a singer, to which Khali urges him to offer a sample of his voice. Khali also adds that he doesn't like sad songs so Manoj shouldn't sing a depressing song. Eventually Manoj agrees and sings 'Hai preet jahan ki reet sada.....Bharat ka rehne wala hoon'. Khali listens keenly and seems very impressed.
Are you chicken? Hoping to keep Khali satisfied and happy, Veena prepares chicken curry and rice for the giant wrestler. He enjoys the sumptuous lunch and appreciates the effort taken to cook the meal. Rahul (the captain of the house) and Khali would be the first to eat is a rule that Bigg Boss had announced and they follow this rule religiously for all meals.
Noon siesta: Although sleeping during the day is taboo, Khali's first half manages to tire him enough to escape for a 10-minute-power nap. He is soon woken up by Ashmit and Rahul who join him for a chat. Playing dumb As a ritual in the house to play some game in the evening, the housemates gather about to play dumb charades. Initially a silent observer, Khali eventually gets excited about the game and joins the housemates to play along

Swiss celebrate digging the world's longest rail tunnel

Workers hugged, cheered and set off fireworks as the huge drill broke through the last stretch of rock deep in the Swiss Alps. There was delight at the end of the tunnel - the world's longest - when it was completed on Friday.

The $10 billion, 35.4-mile (57-kilometre) tube will connect Europe's high-speed rail network and is part of a larger effort to cut in half the number of trucks - now at 1.2 million - that thunder through the Alps each year.

The joy and pride felt throughout Switzerland over digging the Gotthard Base Tunnel reflected the one cause that unites the country's wealthy city dwellers with those living in traditional villages: Protecting the beauty of the mountains.

'Together we risked a lot,' said Swiss Transport Minister Moritz Leuenberger. 'Together we achieved a lot.'

TV stations across Europe showed the event live. The embraces and cheers by the hard-hatted workers brought to mind the successful rescue of 33 trapped miners earlier this week in Chile.

Swiss voters approved the tunnel's construction in a series of referendums almost 20 years ago. Despite some criticism at the cost - almost $1,300 for every citizen - the proposal passed by a wide margin.

Swiss transport Minister Leuenberger, who is also in charge of environment issues, praised Swiss voters and took a swipe at neighboring Germany, where popular opposition threatens to halt the construction of new high-speed rail links and underground train stations.

'Today proves how sustainable, strong and efficient our direct democracy is,' he told miners, VIPs and reporters amid the raucous underground celebrations.

His words were echoed by one of the 2,500 workers who toiled for more than a decade. Dieter Meyer, an electrician from Germany, expressed his awe that Switzerland - a country of just under 8 million people - had chosen to pursue such an ambitious project.

Meyer said Germans should reconsider their opposition to new rail projects if they are serious about protecting the environment and halting climate change.

'This tunnel is the future,' he told The Associated Press. 'In Germany, the people in Stuttgart should really think about whether they want to protest against the new project.'

Protesters in the southwest German city oppose plans to move Stuttgart's station underground, viewing the euro4.1 billion ($5.7 billion) project as a waste of money. Supporters say it will free up the city's packed center and help shorten journeys across Europe.

Other tunnels, including the recently completed 21.5-mile (35.6-kilometer) Loetschberg Base Tunnel, complete an underground network that few other countries can rival.

'I hope that this tunnel will have lots of brothers in the Alps,' Swiss Minister Leuenberger said. His European colleagues, watching the ceremony live at a meeting in Luxembourg, will have recognized the reference to other projects in France, Italy and Austria still many years from completion.

Australia vs India

Contrasting emotions from the two captains. Dhoni smiles along side Tendulkar while Ponting grimaces. He and his team allow the two batsmen to go ahead and then Ponting claps for his bowlers. It has been a hard day for them, but make no mistake, they made it hard for themselves with some poor bowling and fielding. Tendulkar has played through the entire day and reached 191, with India trailing by just 43. Not to forget Vijay who scored a brilliant ton and shared that mammoth triple-century stand with the master. Australia are on the back foot and it will take a huge effort from not only their bowlers but also their batsmen in the second innings against the Indian spinners on this wearing pitch. Johnson picked up 2 wickets today, but Hilfenhaus and George were the stand-outs while Hauritz seemed to get his line back by the evening session. But the off spinner has no wickets for himself. Tomorrow's first session is crucial for Australia. If they manage to dismiss India before Lunch, the match will become evenly poised like the one at Mohali. However, should India bat out for a good portion of the day tomorrow, the home side could well be in a commanding position.

Use of condoms in Games Village, a positive story: Fennell

New Delhi, Oct 7 (PTI) Condoms blocking toilets in the Games village might have come in for some embarrassment but the Commonwealth Games Federation boss Michael Fennell termed it a "positive" story saying that athletes are responsible in promoting safe sex. While sex is not a Commonwealth Games sport, it seems to be an activity in the Games Village at Akshardham housing more than 7,000 athletes, all of whom are in great shape and with plenty of free time at their disposal once knocked out of their respective events.

Asked about the embarraassing scenes of condoms blocking toilets at the Games Village, the CGF president said: "If that is happening, it shows there is use of condoms and I think that is a very positive story, that athletes are being responsible." "This issue was controversial some years back but not now.

Promoting safe sex is a responsible thing to do," he said. Incidentally, athletes received free condoms at every Games Village since Barcelona in 1992 to help raise awareness about AIDS, and in Beijing 2008 it notched up a record with a whopping 100,000 condoms being distributed.

Casting Battle: Priyanka Vs. Kareena For Gandhi Biopic!

It's gonna be a starry upmanship for political power. On screen, that is. Word has it that the international biopic 'Mother: The Indira Gandhi Story' was earlier slated to be lavished upon Priyanka Chopra, with the National Award winning actress in the eponymous seat.

However, matters have taken a new course… and Kareena Kapoor is now being sought after as the ideal star to enact Indira Gandhi!

Reportedly, the Hollywood makers had almost zeroed in on PC, though topline Hollywood make up artistes Jenny Shircore and Greg Cannom are divided on the opinion of lead casting.

While Shircore who pencilled in an Oscar for her outstanding work in 'Elizabeth' felt that PC was the only heroine who could enact Mrs. Gandhi on screen, since she had the perfect face to play the character, Cannom feels differently.

Cannom, who gained laurels for his craft in 'The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button', has tilted the balance in favour of Bebo, as he feels that she suits the part better.

Apparently, Hollywood writer and director Krishna Shah has been roped in to solve the casting dilemma.

States Shah in a tabloid quote, "In a biopic, the most important part is the casting. Can you imagine 'Gandhi' without Ben Kingsley?"

Refuting claims that KK will have to endure the extensive rigours of prosthetic make up, a la' Amitabh Bachchan in 'Paa' and Shah Rukh Khan in 'Ra.One,' Shah opines, "Kareena has a strong jaw and deep eyes and the time taken for her prosthetic make up will not be taxing. Indira Gandhi at 20 will take about an hour; at 50 close to two hours and at 67, about three hours because of the advancement in the art of make up."

Guess, PC and KK can gear up for a... face off!
