Sony Ericsson (SE) announced the launch two new Xperia smartphones In India. While Xperia Ray is a stylish handset, targeted at users who prefer thin and sleek phones, Xperia Active is a rugged smartphone. SE claims Active is water and dust resistant.
"The launch of Xperia Arc and PLAY in April was a milestone for us. While the Xperia Ray makes for a sleek companion, Xperia Active is the perfect partner for Indian consumers with a hectic lifestyle, especially those who are outdoors," said P Balaji, managing director of SE India.
The new Xperia phones that were launched at IndiaOn, an event by Qualcomm, run on a 1Ghz Snapdragon S2 processor. Ray has a 3.3-inch screen and is powered by Android 2.3 aka Gingerbread. It is 9.4mm thick and weighs 100 grams. Also, it has a 8 mega-pixel camera and 512MB RAM.
Xperia Active, meanwhile, has a 3-inch screen. The display is scratch resistant and registers touch even when fingers or screen are wet. It packs 5 mega-pixel camera, 512MB RAM and runs on Gingerbread. It is slightly thicker and heavier than Ray.
According to SE, both phones support the company's proprietary technologies like 'reality display with mobile Bravia engine' that results in a better screen and 'Exmor for mobile' that helps users shoot better pictures and videos in low-light.
SE officials said that Ray will be available in the second week of September while Active is expected in the fourth week. Both are likely to be priced around Rs 20,000.
